Scientific focus areas

My work combines methods in brain, behavioral and social sciences to study how humans adapt, learn, and explore in changing technological environments. My empirical research specifically concerns moods and emotional states, their role in behavioral change, and the function of interoception in shaping conscious learning experience. I apply this research across a wide range of domains ranging from education to health and the arts, informing the design of innovative human-centered technologies for interfacing with emotions.

I am in charge of securing fundings at the network level (coordinating grants such as Templeton, Mind & Life, NIMH, H2020) and managing research groups around trust, resilience, and hyperscanning. Co-founder & CTO: BeSound is a sound-gesture interface to enhance performance and proprioception, and allow virtually any sound to be controlled at a distance from wearable sensors. Work Package leader: SHAREWORK H2020 (as part of STRANE Innovation, France). Sharework project develops a Europe-wide smart modular solution integrated by different software and hardware modules to allow robots to physically interact with humans within a collaborative production environment without the need for physical protection barriers. The project boosts process productivity and improves the ergonomics of those workstations where it is implemented. Project collaborator: FRISSON (as part of MIT Media Lab, US) is an artificial chills generator to enhance content by allowing for single or multiple networked devices to deliver chills at predefined moments during stimuli such as songs or videos. The device is tied to a custom Android application and can be triggered wirelessly and remotely. Active collaboration with Fluid Interfaces Group at MIT Media Lab, US.

Project leader: ChillsDB (as part of Centre for Research and Interdisciplinarity, France) aggregates all existing knowledge about psychogenic shivers in a database listing all articles, teams, sensors, results, brain correlates, claims, and stimuli. This open database was exported into RDF, and serves as a basis for a semantic web interface supporting queries. Ultimately, we aim to offer a visual, interactive and queryable tool for researchers to exchange data and ideas. Collaboration with A. Krishnakumar and A. Project leader: iFeel is a search software allowing you to retrieve emotional comments based on their somatic markers from YouTube videos. Our team is using it to search for content related to peak emotions such as chills and their associated metadata (popularity, comments, geography) and design quantitative sociological models of cultural differences in learning. The whole code and project is openly available on Github. Collaboration with Marc Santolini and Raphaël Tackx at CRI, Paris.
